Winter is coming, and with it, the cold and the snow. This leads to more crowded, poorly ventilated areas. In turn, this increases the risk of transmitting viruses and bacteria, which can cause colds, flu, or gastroenteritis - and some allergies from dust mites. A few simple everyday actions are enough to reduce the spread of germs and protect the whole family from contamination. Others can combat the presence of dust mites. Here are some tips to avoid getting sick this winter and having to use medication!
Avoid getting sick this winter! our advice

SIMPLE ACTIONS TO REDUCE EXPOSURE TO VIRUSES AND BACTERIA

  • Wash your hands regularly:viruses and bacteria are mainly passed on by the hands. It is recommended to wash them often, especially after sneezing, going to the toilet, taking public transport and before preparing or eating a meal.
  • Clean exposed surfaces: door handles, toilet seats and flushes, taps, remote controls, and telephones are often breeding grounds for germs. They must be regularly disinfected. Likewise, it's important to sanitise fabrics that come in contact with the hands, such as sofas, throw blankets and cushions. Finally, consider disinfecting your washing machine by running an empty wash at 90 degrees once a month.
  • Avoid unnecessary contact: a handshake or a simple kiss provides the perfect opportunity for a virus to spread from one person to another.

DUST MITES IN WINTER?

Once the temperature rises above 20°C and the humidity level reaches 50%, they begin to multiply. So why do we see an increase in dust mites in winter? Because the heating and lack of ventilation create the perfect environment for them to grow. And an overexposure to dust mites puts you at risk of developing an allergy. Eliminating allergens reduces any symptoms and improves your daily life.

SIMPLE ACTIONS TO REDUCE EXPOSURE TO DUST MITES

  • Regularly wash bedding and household linen: dust mites only die at a temperature of 56 degrees or above. It is therefore advisable to wash sheets, mattress protectors and pillowcases once at week at 60 degrees. Regular cleaning of curtains and carpets, as well as stuffed toys and textiles from children’s rooms, is also important.
  • Use a hygienic steamer: dust mites can live on all household textiles, and not all of these can be washed at high temperatures. To avoid resorting to chemicals and get rid of them simply and effectively, we recommend Laurastar’s natural Dry Microfine Steam (DMS). Just one application is enough to remove 100% of them, deep into the fibres of the fabric.
  • Air out your home everyday: dust mites love humidity. Therefore, you need to air out your home for at least 30 minutes a day. This will get rid of any moisture present and the cold air will weaken the dust mites. You can also leave your mattress exposed to the air: the moisture accumulated during the night will evaporate more easily.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO DISINFECT WITHOUT CHEMICALS

While allergies are increasing alarmingly in society, there is also a growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. It doesn’t make sense to use chemicals, which are harmful to our health, to eliminate micro-organisms and pests, which are also harmful to our health. However, disinfection is essential to reduce the risk of infection or allergy. There is an obvious need for natural solutions, such as disinfection with steam. Tests have shown that Laurastar’s hygienic steam reliably removes allergens and germs. All Laurastar products are equipped with this steam system. Our IZZI hygienic steamers are especially designed for large surfaces and bulky objects, while the IGGI range with its sterilising set can disinfect smaller surfaces and several small objects at the same time.
